If a gate returns an "urgent" or "vet-first" result — acute symptoms, BCS 8-9, significant
muscle loss, pregnancy/nursing, or a known medical condition — the tool stops there and shows
that result with vet guidance instead of a weight assessment. Otherwise, a vet-provided
target weight always takes priority; failing that, the tool estimates a target from BCS (for
BCS 4-5, current weight is the target) or, for adults with no BCS entered, from the breed's
typical weight range. Resting Energy Requirement (RER) and Maintenance Energy Requirement
(MER) are then calculated from the target weight for weight-loss goals, or from current
weight otherwise — and for weight-loss goals, a 1-2%-per-week timeline is built from the gap
between current and target weight.

Dog A's BCS of 5 means its current weight is its target weight — the main
recommendation is to keep the current routine and re-check BCS every 3-6 months. Dog B's BCS
of 7 means it's carrying roughly two BCS points of excess weight, so the tool estimates a
26.7 kg target and recalculates RER from that lower target weight rather than current weight
— which is why Dog B's RER (822 kcal/day) is lower than Dog A's (942 kcal/day), even before
any multiplier is applied. Both dogs land in the same 1.4-1.6× MER band (neutered adult,
normal activity) — the lower calorie range for Dog B comes entirely from the lower RER
baseline, not from a different activity multiplier. From there, the 5.3 kg gap to target
becomes a 9-17 week timeline at the AAHA-recommended 1-2%-per-week safe loss rate.

How is my dog's target weight estimated?
If you've entered a target weight from your vet, that number is used directly — it always takes priority over any estimate. Otherwise, if your dog's body condition score (BCS) is 4 or 5 (the ideal range), your current weight is treated as the target. For any other BCS, the tool applies the WSAVA-based rule that each BCS point away from 5 represents roughly 10% of body weight, so target weight = current weight ÷ (1 + (BCS − 5) × 0.10). If you skip BCS entirely, adult dogs get a fallback estimate from their breed's typical weight range. Every BCS-based or breed-range estimate carries a "confirm with your vet" caveat — these are starting points, not diagnoses.
What is the body condition score (BCS), and how do I check it at home?
BCS is a 1-9 scale vets use to assess body fat by feel and sight, independent of the number on the scale — a lean 32 kg dog and an overweight 32 kg dog can have very different BCS scores. Run your hands along your dog's ribs and waist: BCS 1-3 means ribs, spine, and hip bones are very visible with no fat cover (underweight); BCS 4-5 means ribs are easily felt under a thin layer of fat with a visible waist and abdominal tuck (ideal); BCS 6-7 means ribs are difficult to feel under fat and the waist is barely visible (overweight); BCS 8-9 means ribs aren't palpable under a heavy fat layer (obese). How are RER and MER calculated, and why does the tool give a range instead of one number?
Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — the calories your dog burns at complete rest — is calculated as 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75, the standard veterinary formula. Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) multiplies RER by a factor that depends on life stage, neuter status, activity level, and goal — a neutered adult at normal activity uses roughly 1.4-1.6×, while an active intact adult or a growing puppy uses a higher multiplier, out of 11 possible bands. The tool returns the full range (for example, 1,319-1,507 kcal/day) rather than a single number because individual metabolism varies meaningfully even within the same life-stage/activity band — start near the middle of the range and adjust based on weight-trend check-ins.
What's a safe rate of weight loss for a dog?
Following AAHA Weight Management Guidelines, the tool targets 1-2% of current body weight lost per week. For a 32 kg dog that needs to lose 5.3 kg to reach an estimated target of 26.7 kg, that works out to roughly 0.32-0.64 kg (0.7-1.4 lb) per week, or about 9-17 weeks in total. What is muscle condition score (MCS), and why is it checked separately from BCS?
BCS measures body fat; MCS measures muscle mass — and a dog can carry plenty of fat (high BCS) while still losing muscle, especially seniors or dogs recovering from illness. The tool uses WSAVA's 3-point scale: normal, some loss (reduced), or significant loss (severely reduced), assessed by feeling along the spine and over the hindquarters. A "severely reduced" result triggers a mandatory vet-first recommendation, because significant muscle wasting alongside a weight-management plan needs veterinary assessment rather than a calorie adjustment alone.
